Cle Elum’s Upper County 12U Babe Ruth Softball team beat out Hoquiam girls in a close game that could have gone either way, according to their coach, Kevin Kelly. After a well played championship game the girls head to the National tournament in Alchua, FL on August 1st to compete in a a game, and experience they will likely remember for a lifetime. Kelly said he will meet with parents to discuss ways to fundraise for the trip, so if you’d like to help contribute, keep your eyes and ears open this weekend. This same group of gals also won the 10U tournament last year, but there are only National tournaments for 12U and 16U teams. The Warriors are one of 20 teams headed to the tournament this year, and we wish them well. Go Warriors!
Investigators reported earlier this week, that the Taylor Bridge wildfire erupting in Eastern Washington may have began near the Cle Elum Bridge, and Firefighters have been working to control the hazardous fire ever since. Yesterday afternoon, the Seattle Times reported that the fire had burned some 22,600 acres, and firefighters were able to contain 25% of the flames. Firefighters are probably a week or so away from fully controlling the fire, and so far there has only been one person injured, a firefighter who received treatment for minor cuts and burns.
As of this morning, reports claim that the firefighters working through the night had a successful night, and ended up evacuating 50 people from their homes near the Lauderdale and Riverview neighborhoods, bringing the total evacuated number up to 500. There are around 900 firefighters currently working to calm the fires and keep them from crossing Interstate 90, and Highway 970 where clumps of timber would likely fuel the flame.
